Soledad in the City
I had a whirlwind day yesterday, and got to see a first-hand Sandy tour of destruction. In the morning, I had a modeling gig at the old military base in Staten Island, which currently houses US Coast Guard personnel. Everything along the beach was gone: just mud and fallen trees in Sandy’s wake.
Around lunch, I was in Downtown Manhattan: nothing but obnoxious, rude tourists. (Thanks, Bloomberg, for turning our entire city into Disneyland. I miss the good old days, when the only people Downtown were Patrick Bateman-like, Yuppie jackasses sniffing blow with other day traders in the bathroom at Harry’s or Fluties. At least those guys dressed better than the swarm of stupid tourists.)
Anyway, every single business in lower Manhattan is boarded up. All of the businesses closed . . . what about all of the people who worked in those businesses? The waiters, store clerks, chefs, janitors . . . are they enjoying Wall Street’s record gains during this “recovery?”
Correction: ALMOST every business in lower Manhattan is closed. Our good friends at Goldman Sachs are open. (They have their own electric power.) Also, you can say “Hi!” to our pals at AIG and Bank of America. They are open for business. You remember them, right? Your tax dollars bailed them out.
Interestingly enough, today’s AM New York stated that Hurricane Sandy victims living in temporary housing in a few hotels will be evicted in a month. I guess the impending onslaught of summer tourists takes preference over tax-paying, New York residents who were left homeless by a hurricane. Thanks, Mayor Mike!
To end on an up note: new Eric Clapton and Depeche Mode music is now available at Starbucks.
