When they’re not indie rockers impressing people at bars, clubs, and concert halls, they’re playing music at Trinity Grace Church in New York!

Costumed characters in Times Square New York City

Will Elmo and friends be banned from Times Square?

Will Elmo and friends be banned from Times Square?

I don’t mind costumed characters in Times Square New York City, but it looks like they’re getting a bad rap lately, thanks to some of them acting out against tourists who won’t pay for the privilege of their kid taking a picture with Cookie Monster, Elmo, Spiderman or Hello Kitty.

Recently, a man in a Cookie Monster costume in Times Square allegedly shoved a 2-year-old when his mom took too long to tip him. Yikes.

If you walk around Times Square, which encompasses several city blocks, you’re likely to count more than four dozen costumed characters along the way! That’s a lot, and perhaps too many. Since the Cookie Monster incident, authorities are now discussing whether or not to crack down on costumed characters in Times Square.

After 2011, the NYC cops didn’t fine costumed characters asking for tips– it’s not against the law. However, Councilman Peter Vallone of Queens is looking into redefining their work so it’s no longer protected as “free speech” by the First Amendment.

What do you think of costumed characters in Times Square New York City? Great for the tourists and kids? Annoying? Should they be banned? Leave your comments.

On average, residents of New York City view around 5,000 advertisements in one day. Mark in the City’s friend Robbie Kleinberg has started a photo blog called #mtacutups on tumblr: http://mtacutups.tumblr.com

Kleinberg takes photos of interesting ads that have been cut up on the MTA’s subway lines around New York. Here are some of his recent postings:

When he’s not showing art on advertising thru his blog, Kleinberg is a Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, performer and producer. Visit his site to hear some of his creations.

Soledad in the City

Soledad in the City

Soledad in the City

I had a whirlwind day yesterday, and got to see a first-hand Sandy tour of destruction. In the morning, I had a modeling gig at the old military base in Staten Island, which currently houses US Coast Guard personnel. Everything along the beach was gone: just mud and fallen trees in Sandy’s wake.

Around lunch, I was in Downtown Manhattan: nothing but obnoxious, rude tourists. (Thanks, Bloomberg, for turning our entire city into Disneyland. I miss the good old days, when the only people Downtown were Patrick Bateman-like, Yuppie jackasses sniffing blow with other day traders in the bathroom at Harry’s or Fluties. At least those guys dressed better than the swarm of stupid tourists.)

Anyway, every single business in lower Manhattan is boarded up. All of the businesses closed . . . what about all of the people who worked in those businesses? The waiters, store clerks, chefs, janitors . . . are they enjoying Wall Street’s record gains during this “recovery?”
Correction: ALMOST every business in lower Manhattan is closed. Our good friends at Goldman Sachs are open. (They have their own electric power.) Also, you can say “Hi!” to our pals at AIG and Bank of America. They are open for business. You remember them, right? Your tax dollars bailed them out.

Interestingly enough, today’s AM New York stated that Hurricane Sandy victims living in temporary housing in a few hotels will be evicted in a month. I guess the impending onslaught of summer tourists takes preference over tax-paying, New York residents who were left homeless by a hurricane. Thanks, Mayor Mike!

To end on an up note: new Eric Clapton and Depeche Mode music is now available at Starbucks.
